Asphalt production plants with a relatively high usage in short periods of time. As a result there was a high capacity per hour. Consumption primarily in the warmer months. Usage of electricity is inferior.

Cause

Looking for information and detailed usage data to reduce energy costs. Could not obtain this information via the power company/network company. Acknowledged the benefits of high quality measurement information. Due to its consumption profile the client was well aware of the additional costs involved.

Solution

Client has a real-time monitoring system for gas and electricity, which makes it possible to monitor the transmission capacity. The client now knows when the capacity is going to be exceeded and can intervene manually. Customer did not opt for the automation of this intervention.

Case - GBC Kerkrade

Client

GBC Kerkrade with two offices.

Type of client

Plastic film for laminating machines. Continuous operation in two shifts. High consumption of energy, usage of gas is inferior. High peaks duo to injection molding process.

Usage

6.000.000 kWh; 360.000 m3; for both sites together

Cause

Has been in an argument with network company. Due to failure of the grid (has happened multiple times), the whole process was started again rapidly when the power was back. Client was not willing to pay for these high peaks of energy consumption.

Solution

Client chose for a real-time monitoring system for electricity and gas. Client now has more insight into the consumption of electricity and gas and is able to control his usage. Monitoring is the starting point to save energy in the future.

Additional information

Client believes that it obvious that the power company should be accommodating. The American parent company imposes an obligation to pay more attention to the energy costs.

Case - Clinics Zwolle

Client

Isala Clinics Zwolle, 3 sites in total.

Type of client

2 hospitals and a general practitioner clinic. Has high peaks of electricity and gas usage.

Usage

5.500.000 m3; use of electricity not known.

Cause

Reimbursement of health care costs (especially for hospitals) was the incentive to find cost saving methods. Especially the deployment of its own CHP's and the associated cost savings were a reason to purchase a complete system.

Solution

Client opted for purchasing a real-time monitoring and control system for the two large sites.

Additional information

Case - Center Parcs

Client

Center Parcs

Type of client

Company exists of multiple sites. Especially in the colder months, there are extreme high usage peaks of gas. Is continuously looking for improvements and cost-saving methods.

Usage

Example location in Drenthe: gas usage 3.000.000 m3; use of electricity is subordinated compared to gas usage and is not being measured.

Cause

High peaks of gas usage cannot be prevented by own BMS system. Is partly dependent on the occupancy rate that is causing the peak. Is able to steer the facilities that consume the largest of gas such as the swimming pool.

Solution

Customer has purchased a real-time monitoring and control system for the central boiler house.

Cause

Client is not happy with the high costs during the extremely short but high peaks. Additional, there is a policy to reduce costs as much as possible. Looking for solutions to reduce current consumption patterns.

Solution

Client has purchased a real-time monitoring and control system. Is now able to steer the boilers. Further processes to save on energy costs are started.

Case - Foundry Lomm

Client

Peters Foundry Lomm

Type of client

Manufacturing castings for different applications. Has high peak because of the production demand throughout the year. Production is bounded by the limited capacity of the transformer.

Usage

In total two sites. Manufacturing site has two transformer. Usage of gas is subordinate.

Cause

Client is limited in production and is paying for a continuous high load. There is no possibility to control the fluctuating load. Searching for a solution for steering the simultaneous decrease. Has problems with timely detecting the failure of the melting process during the start-ups of each working day.

Solution

Solution has been found in a real-time motoring and control system, which can be controller by the client himself. Expansion has been realized by doubling the number of furnaces. A system to detect and signal failures in the process has been incorporated as well.

Additional information

Savings were not calculated as the implementation has prevented an expansion of the connection. The estimated costs associated with this expansion are *€100.000,--*.
Asphalt plants

Case - Since 2002

Client

Multiple customers. Asphalt plants with relatively high consumption in short periods, because of high hourly capacity.

Type of client

Consumption primarily in the warmer months. Usage of electricity is inferior.

Usage

2.500.000 m3; 300.000 kWh; for each plant. Approached via a targeted special offers by an energy supplier. Has been a customer for other products such as inspections for a long time already. Was well aware of the purchase and transportation costs of the materials and has been looking for a decent solution for some time already.

Cause

Was not able to find a suitable solution himself. Experienced problems with a different energy supplier and corresponding network. Current exceedance of transportation costs extremely costly. Client chose real-time monitoring system for gas and electricity and is now able to monitor his transport capacity.

Solution

Intervention. Client did not opt for automation of the process. Monitors the costs closely and is confident in the current energy supplier.

Additional information

Return on investment in less than one year. Costs for each installation: €15.000, saves between €21.000 and €68.000 each year.
Medical clinics

Case - Ecolog in practice 2006

Client

Medical clinics. In total 3 sites: 2 hospitals and one general practitioner clinic.

Type of client

Peaks of gas usage. Owns private CHP.

Usage

5.500.000 m3; use of electricity not known. Reimbursement of health care costs (especially for hospitals) was the incentive to find cost saving methods. External consultant (Energy***) has raised the possibility of monitoring with control.

Cause

Energy*** has found an energy company that was willing to cooperate. Under one condition: to be able to use own CHP for controlling the peaks and delivery. Customer opted for purchasing a real-time monitoring and control system for both (large) sites.

Solution

Return on investment according to the external consultant: less than 1 years. Savings are minimal €65.000,--.

Additional information

Savings appear to be €100.000,-- each year. Return on investment shorter than 1 year was achievable as the costs are €35.000,--. Customer has put his trust in the energy supplier.
Tropical Swimming Paradises

Case - Tropical Swimming Paradises (analysis)

Gained insights into high use of energy as to where and how the energy is being used (heating, air, water, refreshing etc). Solution: real-time monitoring system allows to have continuous insight into the consumption and the analysis has led to steps taken from isolation to heat pumps. Generally, in cooperation with X-LOG it is now possible to detect malfunctions within 6 weeks.

Cause

Approached via a special offer. Customer was well aware of the purchase and transport costs and has been looking for a suitable solution for a while. Was not able to bring a suitable solution forward himself. There were problems with his power company/network company in Amsterdam. Current exceedance was extremely costly. Client chose for a graduated implementation of real-time monitoring for each plant.

Solution

Client has a real-time monitoring system for gas and electricity, which makes it possible to monitor the transmission capacity. The client now knows when the capacity is going to be exceeded and can intervene manually. Customer did not opt for the automation of this intervention. Additionally, the customer has opted for a central readout, for each asphalt plant, via the head office.

Case - Packaging

Client

Blagden Packaging in Halsteren.

Type of client

Prints barrels and buckets. Continuous operation in two shifts. Has high peaks of electricity and gas usage.

Usage

3.300.000 kWh; 800.000 m3; for two sites together

Cause

Client made use of different energy companies for gas and energy. Was not able to receive appropriate measurement data via these providers, but was interested in more information about saving on energy costs. We have proposed energy monitoring and control in combination with a energy reduction research. At the same time, the municipal Environmental Department required such an investigation as well because of a revision of the environmental permit.

Solution

Client has chose for real-time monitoring and control installation and has allowed to execute an energy saving research. Additionally, client opted for the monitoring of production usages.

Additional information

Client believes that it goes without saying that the energy company assists in controlling his energy costs. Estimated saving of €25.500 per year, including a 2% energy usage reduction.

Case - Soft Drink

Client

Soft Drink International Heerlen. Exists of two sites that are located next to each other. Company has German owners and they have been making use of the same energy supplier for years now.

Producer of soft drinks.

Usage

12.000.000 kWh; 350.000 m3; for both locations together

Cause

Has been monitoring since 2002. The rising energy prices was one of the reasons to start monitoring. Meanwhile, the client has expanded the monitoring process with water usage and the volume of production. They have done some energy saving research already as well. Customer is actively engaged in new forms of energy generation.

Solution

Client purchased a complete installation, therefore a real-time monitoring and control installation has been placed and an energy saving research has been conducted. Next to this, the customer has chosen to monitor production processes and production quantities.

Additional information

Client has participated in various activities to promote the monitoring services and products. The amount of money saved by the client is not known, but the client has indicated that he has earned back his initial investment already.

Cause

Peaks in gas usage and the high costs paired with this usage led the client to search for cost-saving methods. Wished to have detailed insight into the other usages to form a basis for further savings.

Solution

Customer has purchased a real-time monitoring and control system. Is now able to steer the boilers during upcoming peaks.

Client feels that he pays avoidable high transport costs. Seeking for solutions to save on consumption as well.

Solution

Client has requested Brandts Information System to do research. Client has purchased a real-time monitor and control system in the meanwhile. There is an agreement to start with additional energy saving projects after implementation of the current one.

Case - Meru Vlodrop

Maharishi European Research University. Worldwide contribution to the quality of education. Improving physical as well as mental health.

Usage

The foundation has many locations with several objectives in multiple countries. In Vlodrop the consumption is 3.300.000 kWh and 280.000m3 gas each year.

Cause

Client is confronted with increasing energy consumption and costs. Peaks quantities lead to additional costs. Focusing on the use of renewable sources instead of finite sources. Is looking for a complete solution for energy management with consideration. Energy now receives daily attention.

Solution

The overall concept from purchasing renewable energy, via energy saving projects to socially responsible consumption of energy. Sub-projects: purchasing sustainable energy, energy monitoring with peak control and energy saving projects through various new techniques.

Meanwhile, the client has expanded the monitoring process with water usage and the volume of production twice already. They have done some energy saving research already as well. Customer is actively engaged in new forms of energy generation. Customer purchased a complete installation. Real-time monitoring and control installation has been installed and energy saving research has been conducted.

Solution

Client has opted for monitoring a share of the consumption during production processes. Customer has cooperated with several occasions to promote the services and products of TW services.

Additional information

Total savings are not known, but client has indicated that he has earned back his initial investment already. Number of available jobs has risen because of lower costs.
Large hospital

Case - Large hospital (preventing high peaks)

Through continuous real-time monitoring the time and cause of the peak can be specified. Automatic intervention will prevent peaks. Solution: Converting boilers to burners on gas and oil, before the peak in gas usage appears there will be switched to oil (-20% costs)
